Scaling & Polishing

No matter how well we brush or floss our teeth, there will always be hard-to-reach areas that are difficult to clean. Over time, plaque bacteria will start to build up and eventually mineralize into a crusty deposit called calculus or tartar.

This accumulation of calculus or tartar is impossible to remove with brushing alone. However, if it is not removed, eventually more plaque will build up around your teeth and even under the gum line. This could lead to gum disease.

To reduce your risk of gum disease or help remove the buildup of plaque, your oral hygienist can perform a professional clean known as a scale and polish.

A scale and polish leave the surface of your teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria cannot stick to them, increasing the chance of keeping your teeth clean for longer.

It is advised that patients regularly come in for a scale and polish in addition to a good daily oral health routine so that you lower your risk of gum disease or other dental issues.
